Toolbox Talk – Excavation Safety

Excavation works are regarded as a high-risk activity, failure to safeguard excavations could result in serious injury or fatalities. The ground conditions play an important role in the methods to be used to safeguard the excavations.

Control measures for safeguarding excavations must be determined and designed by a competent person appointed in writing, and daily inspections are to be done on the excavations as well as the area surrounding the excavations.

Excavation edges should be provided with a solid form of barricading to prevent a person from falling into such excavation. Excavations also require safe means of access and egress; this ladder or similar access method must be located not further than six meters away from where the work is taking place inside the excavation.
