On many construction sites, safety is often measured by the presence of documentation such as…
Toolbox Talk – MEWPs (Mobile elevating work platforms)
This toolbox talk focuses on MEWPs Mobile elevating work platforms. The most significant MEWP dangers are encountered during the operation and use of the machine rather than its movement from various locations on a construction site. The use of MEWPs must be included in the relevant Risk Assessments, Safe Work Procedures and Site Traffic Management Plans. Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP) are a types of ‘plant’, or equipment that facilitate working at height. They consist of a working platform on an extending structure and chassis, with controls for operation. There are two basic types of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs): 1. Scissor 2. Boom.
MEWPs of all types have the prime purpose of lifting people, tools and equipment to elevated work positions. Due to the application and sometimes misuse of MEWPs, they are not without inherent dangers. Therefore, every single aspect of a MEWP is governed by stringent safety standards and regulations.
A common misconception which is widely experienced in the construction industry is the “Hand Over Orientation” document is confused with a competency certificate. Disclaimers on these documents usually read as follows; ‘It is the Customer’s responsibility to ensure that the person(s) using this machine have received the appropriate instructions, information and competency training and the Hire Company accepts no responsibility in the event of an accident should the person(s) using this machine not have undergone the relevant NQF registered MEWP qualification training.”
Key issues to take note of include:
- MEWP Hazards
- Controlling of Risks
- Inspection, Maintenance and Examination
- Training and Competency
Risks that must be controlled include:
- Confined overhead working. Ground conditions.
- Outrigger establishment.
- Guardrails and fall arrest.
- Falling objects
- Weather conditions.
Daily inspection must be done and recorded
Safety harnesses must be used by MEWP operators at all times. To download the entire toolbox talk – MEWPs Mobile elevating work platforms, follow the link.
