Toolbox Talk – Project Shutdown Checklist

As we prepare for a project shutdown, it is essential to secure the site, protect equipment, and address all safety and environmental risks. A thorough approach prevents hazards, protects assets, and ensures a smooth restart when operations resume.

Key Areas to Address

  1. Barricading and Fall Protection:
    • Inspect and secure all barricades around edges, openings, and excavations.
    • Cover open holes to prevent falls and ensure scaffolding is tagged and stable.
    • Store fall arrest and lifeline equipment properly to avoid damage.
  2. Electrical Safety:
    • Conduct inspections of all temporary electrical installations and document findings.
    • Secure or disconnect exposed power points and elevate electrical equipment to avoid flooding damage.
    • Ensure DB boards are locked, have cover plates, and are equipped with earth leakage protection.
  3. Environmental and Erosion Control:
    • Use sandbags or silt curtains to manage erosion on slopes and drainage points.
    • Secure stockpiles and excavations with proper fencing or signage.
    • Check for weeds or invasive plants on stockpiles and clear them before closure.
  4. Site Security:
    • Verify that fencing is intact and all entry points are secured with locks or barricades.
    • Ensure “No Entry” and safety signage is visible at all access points.
    • Update emergency contact lists and provide them at the main gate.
  5. Machinery and Equipment:
    • Lock away or remove all plant and tools from the site. Remove keys and secure batteries.
    • Ensure all machinery is parked securely and placed on drip trays if necessary.
    • Perform final checks to confirm equipment is in good working order and properly stored.
  6. Housekeeping:
    • Remove loose materials from roofs, decking areas, and scaffolding platforms.
    • Secure or remove combustible materials and waste piles.
    • Clean and organize material laydown areas, ensuring non-used materials are removed.
  7. Fire Prevention and Emergency Preparedness:
    • Inspect and position fire extinguishers in accessible locations, including for security guards.
    • Ensure emergency lighting is functional, and all fire-fighting equipment is in working condition.
    • Communicate standby emergency plans to all relevant personnel.
  8. Hazardous Chemicals:
    • Lock hazardous substances in ventilated storage with appropriate signage and spill kits.
    • Ensure all chemical containers are labeled, and safety data sheets are accessible.
  9. Public Safety:
    • Clear and secure public walkways and roads near the site.
    • Address potential hazards like unsecured trenches or unexpected cavities to ensure public safety.

Final Checklist

  • Facilities: Portable toilets and ablution facilities should be cleaned, secured, and accessible for security.
  • First Aid: Inspect first aid kits and ensure they are fully stocked and available.
  • Scaffolding: Tag all scaffolds correctly and remove loose materials from platforms.

By following this checklist, we ensure the site is safe, secure, and compliant during the shutdown. A well-organised shutdown reduces risks and simplifies the return to work.

Reminder: Address any concerns or incomplete tasks immediately. Let’s prioritise safety as we wrap up operations!
