Architecture History in South Africa
Architecture History in South Africa can tell a great story once one takes a look into the past. The construction industry within South Africa has always been one of the largest contributors to the economy. But since 2010 during the Soccer World Cup project, the industry has faced a deep crisis. In 2014 the sector got off to a very bleak start with workers striking leading to unrest with the clients. This resulted in major projects experiencing significant delays in completion. However, construction projects did boom in 2010 to ensure proper preparation for the world cup was in place.
A total of 6 newly built stadiums were constructed and the other 4 underwent revamping and upgrading. These newly built stadiums were an investment for South Africa. But it also resulted in billions of rands being spent where the expected return of economic investment did not entirely match the spending cost. It is important to take a look at Architecture History in South Africa, to inspire future generations and future designs.
Constructions Contribution to the South African Economy
The construction industry in South Africa has been a major contributor to the Gross Domestic Product. The average GDP the construction industry has made is R52159.66 million from the 1960s to now. It is evident that the industry does provide an immense contribution to the country’s economy. However, after 2010, the industry experiences some difficulties to maintain its progress curve. As stated, above many projects after 2010 experienced delays due to a decline. Unrest within the labour force and a subdued macroeconomic environment. Beyond that, the sector also faced external pressures regarding a weak currency, material supply and labour inflation playing a major role in the industry.
However, it was predicted that the construction industry would thrive over the period of 2016 – 2020 with many investments and contributions to many projects. Taking a look back, this statement has become a testament, as there has been major investment within the industry over the last four years. The output of the South African construction sector is expected to rise by 2.62% Compound Annual Growth. It was announced that the budget in 2015 was an estimated R813.1 million that was aimed to be pushed into the infrastructure over the next 3 years (2015 – 2018). During that time, the focus was aimed on many upgrades and expansions of the project, especially airports would be the focus at that stage.
2014 – 2022
The construction industry has made great investments with numerous major projects that have been completed since then. Projects such as Time Square at Menlyn Maine started in 2014 and were completed in 2018. This precinct has ensured that the Menlyn area has become an iconic destination and contributed to uplifting the community. Other mammoth projects and sites such as The Leonardo and The Marc, made major headlines and investments in the South African economy, both these sites were completed in 2019.
During Covid, the construction industry was one of the few sectors that opened earlier than others. The industry could commence with work after some time. 2022 marked the year that Covid became a thing of the past. The world went back to normal prior to the worldwide shutdown. The construction industry is booming and will continue to expand, as many projects, precincts, developments, and sites that are in the pipeline. There are many projects to look forward to in the major cities of South Africa. Such as Harbour Arch in Cape Town, Irene Link Precinct expansions at Menlyn Maine and even distribution and data centres. All these investments, developments and improvements within certain areas have uplifted South Africa and ensured a hopeful future for all.
We are looking forward to what the next few years have installed for all that is within the construction industry and that we will be a part of making history within South Africa.
