Toolbox Talk – Blasting Requirements
This weeks toolbox talk is focused on blasting requirements. Blasting, is the process of reducing a solid body, such as rock, to fragments by using an explosive. Conventional blasting operations include; drilling holes, placing a charge and detonator in each hole, detonating the charge, and clearing away the broken material.
Suggestions:
Safeguarding of Explosives workplace. A copy of special/specific rules, regulations and operating instructions is communicated to all employees within the danger area.
1.5 Blasting Agents: A blasting agent is any material or mixture consisting of a fuel and oxidizer that is intended for blasting and that is not otherwise classified as an explosive.
Safe handling of explosives
Vehicles containing explosives are left unattended only in designated places. Explosives should not be exposed to direct rays of the sun or rain, even when being transported. No explosives should be left unattended allow unauthorized access to such explosives. Must not Dump, bury, hide or abandoned any explosives
Explosive may only be used if:
- Received written permission issued by or under the authority of the chief inspector of occupational health & safety
- Must undergo training and have constant supervision
Safety Distances
- Best safety practice is 20m clearance
- Adhere to the blasting plan requirements regarding safe distances.
- The blasting plan requirements must be communicated to all employees on site.
Warning Signage
A siren will be used prior to blasting to warn all employees in the surrounding area
Flyrock
Flyrock is created when the force of an explosion projects rock fragments in varying directions that exceed the desired or expected distances from the blast face. Blast to be covered to prevent flyrock.
