Toolbox Talk – Foreign Object Debri
Foreign object debris (FOD) in data centres is any extraneous material that can interfere with equipment, cause failures, or damage components, leading to downtime. Sources of FOD include loose hardware like screws and bolts, tools, rags, trash, and even natural elements like dust or wildlife. Prevention involves strict procedures, such as accounting for all tools, using proper personal protective equipment, and regularly inspecting and cleaning the facility, as detailed in the FAA Advisory Circular and advocated by companies like Galebreaker.
What is Foreign Object Debris (FOD)?
Definition: Any material that doesn’t belong in the data centre environment and can cause problems.
Examples:
- Hardware (nuts, bolts, screws, connectors)
- Tools and small parts
- Rags, paper, and trash
- Natural materials like dust or plant fragments
- Even wildlife
Why is it a problem?
- Equipment damage: Debris can get into server components, fans, and other critical parts, causing them to malfunction or break.
- Downtime: The resulting equipment failure can lead to significant service interruptions, which are costly for data centres to recover from.
- Safety risks: In some situations, debris can create safety hazards for personnel.
How to prevent FOD
Implement strict procedures:
- Clean as you go: Personnel should clean up their workspaces and equipment immediately after use.
- Tool control: Meticulously account for every tool and part used during maintenance or installation.
- Account for materials: Before and after any work, personnel should check that all materials they brought into the area are removed.
Maintain a clean environment:
- Regular cleaning: Conduct frequent and thorough cleanings of the data center floor, racks, and equipment.
- Regular sweeps: Perform scheduled “FOD walks” to proactively search for and remove debris.
- Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ensure workers use appropriate PPE, such as safety goggles, to protect themselves from potential debris or arc flashes.
Training and awareness:
- Educate personnel: Train all staff on the importance of FOD prevention and the correct procedures to follow.
- Reinforce with visual aids: Use posters and other materials to keep the issue top-of-mind.
- Consider specialized equipment: Some companies offer physical debris screens to help prevent larger objects from entering critical areas.
