Toolbox Talk – IP Ratings
This toolbox talk focuses on IP ratings. The IP rating or IP code classifies the degree of protection provided by an enclosure, for electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72.5 kV. This standard defines levels of sealing effectiveness against “ingress”.
Below are the list of Solid and Liquid ratings:
Solid
- No Protection
- Protected against a solid object greater than 50mm such as a hand
- Protected against a solid object greater than 12,5mm such as a finger
- Protected against a solid object greater than 2,5mm such as a wire
- Protected against a solid object greater than 1,0mm such as a thin strap
- Dust protected limited ingress, no harmful deposits
- Dust tight. No ingress of dust
Liquid
- No protection
- Protected against water drops
- Protected against water drops at a 15-degree angle
- Protected against water drops at a 60-degree angle
- Protected against water splashing from any angle
- Protected against water from any angle
- Protected against powerful water jets and heavy seas
- Protected against effects of temporary submersion in water – 1m deep for 30min
- Protected against the effects of permanent submersion in water – 1m or more for more than 30min
