Toolbox Talk – Zero Electrical Energy Checks
Electrical energy is a serious hazard—one mistake can cause severe injury or death. Zero-energy checks are mandatory before work begins. Workers must isolate, lock, tag, and verify equipment to prevent re-energisation and keep everyone safe.
Zero Electrical Energy
- De-energize & Isolate – All electrical equipment must be de-energized and isolated by a qualified Energy Marshal / SAP before work begins.
- Personal Lock & Tag – Every worker must apply their own red personal lock and tag to ensure re-energisation is impossible without their consent / personal lock removal.
- Arc Flash PPE – Mandatory use of Arc Flash PPE and approved testing equipment as specified on arc flash label during zero energy verification.
- Two-Person Check – Two person verification of zero energy is required for non-qualified persons working near live equipment such as for cleaning, inspections etc.
- Ongoing Verification – Zero energy checks should be completed throughout the day to ensure zero energy condition remains.
- Know the Standards – For more information consult SPS101 Energy Isolation, Microsoft Construction Policy, NFPA70E and your Energy Marshal.
