Toolbox Talk – Demolition, Know Your Supervisor

Demolition work is high-risk. Appointing a competent Demolition Supervisor is not only a legal requirement under Construction Regulation 14(1), but also critical to ensuring the safety of everyone on site.

Who is a Demolition Supervisor?

A Demolition Supervisor is a competent person—appointed in writing—to oversee and manage all demolition-related activities. This person must have the necessary qualifications, experience, and leadership skills to ensure safe execution of the work.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision of Demolition Activities
  • Oversee manual, mechanical, and explosive demolition operations.
  • Ensure all workers are following the approved method statement and risk assessments.
  1. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
  • Identify site-specific hazards (e.g., asbestos, unstable structures).
  • Develop risk assessments and control measures to mitigate these risks.
  1. Safety Planning and Implementation
  • Create and implement fall protection, rescue plans, and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure all workers have the correct PPE and know how to use it.
  1. Compliance with Regulations
  • Ensure work complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
  • Make sure only qualified personnel perform specific tasks (e.g., handling DBs, using machinery).
  1. Training and Communication
  • Conduct safety briefings and ensure all workers are trained in safe demolition practices.
  • Maintain open communication and lead by example.
  1. Reporting and Record-Keeping
  • Report incidents, near misses, and non-compliance.
  • Keep accurate records of inspections, training, and meetings.
  1. Health and Safety File Management
  • Keep the demolition section of the safety file updated and available for inspection.

Quick Reminders:

  • Never start demolition without confirming that utilities have been safely disconnected.
  • Always follow the sequence in the demolition method statement.
  • Keep unauthorised personnel away from the demolition zone.
  • Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions are identified.
