Toolbox Talk – Barricading and Signage Around Excavations

Excavations are among the most dangerous areas on any construction site. One slip, trip, or wrong step can lead to serious injury or even death. Barricading and signage are our first line of defence — protecting both workers and the public from entering unsafe areas.

Why Barricading Matters

Barricades are not just “red tape.” They are physical barriers that stop people and vehicles from accidentally entering a hazardous zone. According to Construction Regulation 2, every excavation accessible to the public or near a road must be secured with barriers at least one metre high and clearly visible, even at night.

Types of Barricading

  • Concrete Jersey Barriers
Heavy-duty barriers are ideal for roadworks or where traffic runs close to an excavation. They provide strong physical protection from vehicles.
  • Road Close Barriers
Used to block access to entire sections of a road or pathway. These send a clear message that the area is restricted.
  • Excavation Barrier Netting
Lightweight but highly visible. Often used as a temporary perimeter barrier to mark out the danger zone.
  • Danger / Warning Tape
A simple and cost-effective option for short-term work. While it provides a visual warning, it should never be the only method of barricading in high-risk areas.

Types of Signage

Signs act as the voice of the site, communicating risks clearly. Common excavation signage includes:

  • “Danger: Excavation” – Warns of immediate hazards.
  • “Keep Out” / “Authorised Personnel Only” – Restricts access.
  • Illuminated or reflective signs – Critical for night work or areas with poor visibility.

According to SANS 10400-G, the owner of a site must ensure that excavations are maintained in a safe condition, which includes providing visible and effective signage.
